Special Guidance for At-Risk Homeowners

Today’s headlines are stark.

Washington lost 527,000 jobs in April as state unemployment soared to a record 15.4%. A significant part of our local economy has down-shifted to a slow, difficult slog or even a dead stop. Many of us are rightly concerned about bills, including recurring monthly payments such as a mortgage.

If you or someone you know is feeling less certain about making ends meet, then please consider speaking to someone for advice and financial assistance. Homeowners can act today.

As we stay at home with multiple screens running and lights on, our electric bill will likely jump. There are programs available to help defray the cost of your utility bills. For example, the Utility Discount Program offers eligible customers a 60% discount on their Seattle City Light bill and 50% off their Seattle Public Utilities statement. See if your household qualifies. (Live outside Seattle? Please check your utility company website for discount programs available to those in need.)

Uncertain how to address other household bills? The Washington Homeownership Resource Center can help. WHRC is dedicated to educating and empowering current and future owners in our state. The group partners with other state agencies to assist home buyers and owners who may be heading toward foreclosure. The advice is free.

A home is the biggest investment of your life. Mortgage lenders are putting relief measures in place to ensure homeowners have options if they’re unable to make payments. Be sure to be proactive and get help before it’s too late.
