VIDEO: The Amazing Growth of Seattle – In Less Than a Minute

I love time-lapse videos. They can crystalize change and progress, turning days into mere seconds.

The Washington Department of Transportation – better known here as WSDOT (pronounced WASH-dot) – recently shared a time-lapse video, showing six years (2012-2018) of construction from a vantage point just east of The Gates Foundation headquarters and Seattle Center.

In the foreground, the video shows the reconnection of 6th Avenue North between Harrison and Thomas streets. But what’s fun to watch – over and over – is the changing city skyline all around. You can see the exterior of KING-5’s old television studios on Dexter Avenue before it disappeared, having moved operations to SoDo a couple of years ago. And, of course there are the twin Insignia Towers in the top-right corner of the video – and many other structures – that suddenly popped into the sky. What a sight!

To steal a phrase: This is not your father’s Seattle. Have a look:

The change to 6th Avenue North, just south of Mercer Street, was necessitated by the addition of the new SR-99 tunnel. The newly completed road will allow drivers to enter the tunnel for a southbound journey underneath the city.
